{"id":2670,"date":"2022-01-03T12:41:29","date_gmt":"2022-01-03T20:41:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wagers.com\/staging\/4285\/?p=2670"},"modified":"2022-01-03T12:44:02","modified_gmt":"2022-01-03T20:44:02","slug":"penns-gibraltar-trading-hub-move-criticized","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wagers.com\/staging\/4285\/news\/penns-gibraltar-trading-hub-move-criticized\/","title":{"rendered":"Penn\u2019s Gibraltar trading hub move criticized"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The news came in a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/feed\/update\/urn:li:activity:6880841868972699648\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LinkedIn posting<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from Patrick Jay, previously hired by theScore to head up its sports trading division and now apparently changed with the same gig for Penn National.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jay said the company was looking to build \u201cthe best North American Sports Betting Risk and Trading Team in the business\u201d from a \u201cnew hub\u201d in Gibraltar.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He added that the successful candidates \u201cwill know in their DNA\u2019 that the role is about more than just \u201cold-school risk management\u201d but would be about \u201ctaking risk management on the full 360 of the Sportsbook future &#8211; product, promotions, presentation, as well as pricing and liability management.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf you are the Trader 2.0 of the future who wants to put the fan and the fan experience at the center of Sportsbook Risk and Trading Operations, please DM me for 2022 take off,\u201d Jay signed off.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Offshore 2.0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The posting was immediately seized upon by commentators on Twitter as being something of a retrograde step. One poster, Henrik Invest, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/henrikinvest\/status\/1475815339871121417?s=20\">asked<\/a> \u201cwhat happened to U.S traders and boots on the ground argument DK and Penn have brought up before as the main argument for insourcing?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another poster <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Rex_Beyers\/status\/1475968190643531776?s=20\">was more scathing<\/a>: \u201cI&#8217;ve worked in Gibraltar. I can tell you they know next to nothing there about any sports we specialize in here in the USA,\u201d said Rex Beyers.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What\u2019s the story?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When Penn National stumped up $2bn to buy Score Media &amp; Gaming in the summer last year, CEO Jay Snowden made much of the \u201cin-house managed risk and trading services platform\u201d that theScore was building \u201cspecifically for the North American market\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While he didn\u2019t specifically suggest that component would necessarily be in North America, he did talk about putting together a state-of-the-art tech stack \u201cbuilt for the North American market.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When it comes to trading built-for does not necessarily mean built-in though analysts could be forgiven for thinking they meant the same thing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Others have made the connection more explicit. During a recent presentation at a conference hosted by Jefferies, the US CEO at PointsBet Johnny Aitken said that not only was the company not ceding that to a third-party such as Kambi\u201d but also that \u201cour trading team is based in the US on US hours\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThat is also unique versus how most of our competitors are set up.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/wagers.com\/staging\/4285\/news\/who-trades-in-the-u-s\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">discussed previously<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, this was a questionable claim. But the sentiment holds that most of Penn National\u2019s competitors have gone the route of putting together local trading teams.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This includes, ironically, the current supplier of Penn&#8217;s Barstool business Kambi which runs a trading team out of Philadelphia.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>The impact of being offshore<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The wider question is whether this matters. For that, we likely need to delve deeper into why Penn would choose Gibraltar as a trading hub.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jay\u2019s recent background is instructive. After stints at Ladbrokes and the Hong Kong Jockey Club, he was previously CEO at failed UK-facing challenger brand MoPlay which was based in Gibraltar. His LinkedIn profile says he is still based there.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He joined theScore, pre-Penn acquisition, in July last year and according to Benjie Levy, COO at theScore, he was the \u201cideal candidate\u201d to lead the migration of risk and trading in-house.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>A European home<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And what about Gibraltar? It has long been the home of many European-facing operators. But its original appeal as an essentially tax-free haven from which to conduct point of supply offshore and grey operations has long since waned.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Overtaken by the development of point of consumption regimes across Europe, its appeal now is more nebulous. A hub, yes, but a diminished one and with a shrinking talent pool. Hence, presumably, the social media call-out for \u2018trader 2.0\u2019 characters to fill the breach.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Could these positions have been fulfilled in the US and Canada? Of that, the answer is an unequivocal yes. The U.S. is now a self-sustaining sports-betting market with efforts being made across the sector to build the technology to drive the market forward and a growing talent pool.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is not fanciful that in the next few years, developments in U.S sports betting will transform the global sector. At the very least, it will be attracting the levels of investment sure to attract the top talent.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this light, the decision to base a trading hub at a location outside of the US is in danger of looking somewhat short-sighted. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Talk about risk management.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The news came in a LinkedIn posting from Patrick Jay, previously hired by theScore to head up its sports trading division and now apparently changed with the same gig for Penn National.
