{"id":6040,"date":"2022-03-21T11:13:18","date_gmt":"2022-03-21T18:13:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wagers.com\/staging\/4285\/?p=6040"},"modified":"2022-03-21T11:22:16","modified_gmt":"2022-03-21T18:22:16","slug":"data-deals-point-to-ncaa-betting-shift","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wagers.com\/staging\/4285\/news\/data-deals-point-to-ncaa-betting-shift\/","title":{"rendered":"Data deals point to NCAA betting shift"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Two deals by the major sports data providers point to NCAA being the next major field of data competition, suggest sources.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recent deals involving Sportradar and Genius Sports have a significance for the market for College sports data, and particularly College football.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First we have Sportradar\u2019s deal with Bowl Season, which coordinates the various College Bowl games at the end of the football season.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the press release, the deal involved a \u201cstrategic advisory\u201d aspect including help and support when it comes to Bowl Season\u2019s educational efforts and specifically during its annual general meeting.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The second deal came with Genius Sports\u2019 deal with the Mid-Atlantic Conference (MAC) that is an all-encompassing \u201csports data, fan engagements and integrity partnership\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>The deal details<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sportradar said in its press release that the deal reflected the company&#8217;s \u201ccontinuous efforts to strengthen its college sports offering for partners and customers.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As part of this, the company\u2019s recently acquired Synergy Sports unit has been providing coaching, scouting and analytics to Colleges since 2007. Meanwhile, the company has also struck up integrity partnerships with various college athletic conferences and had launched a direct-to-consumers broadcasting platform with a college sports partner.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe see untapped potential in the collegiate sports space, and this multifaceted partnership will help the organization enhance an already exciting experience for their fans and reach a broader audience,\u201d said Sportradar chief commercial officer Ed Blonk in a statement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSportradar\u2019s expertise in creating immersive experiences for sports fans is a perfect fit for Bowl Season,\u201d said Bowl Season executive director Nick Carparelli.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Genius Sports\u2019 deal with MAC, meanwhile, will see the company \u201ccapture, manage and distribute\u201d game data via Genius already existing NCAA LiveStats offering while its Second Spectrum business will provide data tracking and video augmentation solution to MAC\u2019s men&#8217;s basketball championship.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MAC commissioner Jon Steinbrecher said of the deal that it would permit his organization \u201cto exert greater control of our statistics, provide increased oversight over events through the utilization of integrity services and provide support and financial benefits for the Conference and its membership.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He added that MAC has a \u201cresponsibility to manage our assets and leverage those assets for the benefit of the student-athletes and our member institutions.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>The data element is key<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Notably missing from each of the press releases about either deal is sports betting.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Indeed, the Sportradar deal doesn\u2019t even mention data collection, though sources suggest that is very much a part of the deal.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yet, as an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.co.uk\/college-sports\/story\/_\/id\/33460154\/mac-reaches-stats-partnership-data-sold-sports-betting-companies\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ESPN story<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on the deal pointed out, all five states covered by the MAC conference &#8211; Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, New York, Ohio &#8211; either have have regulated mobile sports betting or have passed legislation to do so.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In that same story, Steinbrecher said: &#8220;We&#8217;re doing this to control our data, which ends up in the public domain anyway.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;We want to manage that asset,&#8221; Steinbrecher\u00a0 said. &#8220;We want that asset to provide value back to our institutions so that we can support our student-athletes, plain and simple.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hence, as a source told Wagers.com, the two pieces of recent news are an acknowledgement that the \u201crapidly evolving college sports data ecosystem\u201d is likely to be \u201cthe next battleground\u201d for sports data for sports betting purposes.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>NCAA\u2019s stance on betting<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This may sound somewhat at odds with the official stance of the NCAA. Those LiveStats provided by Genius Sports, for instance, are not meant for use in betting.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the NCAA official statement on betting, the body \u201copposes all forms of legal and illegal sports wagering on college sports.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How this official position squares with the betting activity that surrounds March Madness and the rest of the college sports calendar is something that only the NCAA could &#8211; but likely won\u2019t &#8211; answer.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Data deals point to acceptance<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hence, the deals done recently suggest the body is inching to a more realistic position.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Attempting to hold the line on betting while officially doing deals that inevitably involve data being passed on to the sportsbooks is increasingly unsustainable.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As sources suggest, with all the major leagues now having done deals for data, it leaves the College conferences as the last big area for sports data expansion.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To ESPN Steinbrecher said: &#8220;We are of the opinion that the deal we&#8217;re entering into is consistent with NCAA rules and regulations.&#8221;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Consistent? Maybe. More realistically, recent deals done by Sportradar and Genius Sports suggest we are on the cusp of another sports data land grab.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even if sports betting is missing from the official press releases, it won\u2019t be hard to read between the lines to understand what the deals are really all about.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Two deals by the major sports data providers point to NCAA being the next major field of data competition, suggest sources.
